The State Theatre

The State Theatre is a hub for live performance and cinema in downtown State College. The community-owned non-profit organization is a home for local artists and performing groups—plus a popular stop for national touring acts. The theatre also hosts live broadcasts of the Metropolitan Opera and screens an eclectic mix of contemporary and classic films.

Warner Brothers opened The State Theatre in 1938 as a test market for new films. As times changed and as the venue’s original ambience declined, the theatre closed in 2001. But thanks to a gift from theatre owners Sidney and Helen Friedman, plus a development campaign, the venue at 130 W. College Avenue was reconstructed and outfitted with state-of-the-art technology. The theatre reopened in 2006.
