Las Cafeteras musicians to conduct free virtual storytelling workshop Sept. 20

Members of alt-folk band Las Cafeteras will lead the free virtual workshop “The Sounds of Resistance: From Storytelling to Movement Building.”

The event, presented in collaboration with Penn State Hispanic Heritage Month Committee, will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20. The program is free, but registration is required. Visit https://tinyurl.com/yn4z7cyj to register. Visit Las Cafeteras online for more information.

The Los Angeles-based band is known for its contemporary protest songs, fusing Afro-Mexican beats and rhythms, and traditional instruments to bridge a variety of cultures and communities.

In the interactive session, the artists will discuss how they use song and lyrics to highlight immigration struggles, cultural identity and privilege. They will provide prompts for participants to explore their own narratives. The event will culminate in sharing of the new narratives to music by Las Cafeteras.
