Italian Evening
7:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 12
Eisenhower Auditorium
Les Grands Ballets Canadiens enriches Montréal, and other destinations on tour, with its creativity and intercultural approach. Gradimir Pankov, who became artistic director in 2000, has brought innovation to the company. Italian Evening features two dances, The Four Seasons and Cantata, both choreographed by Italian Mauro Bigonzetti but quite different in style. “Bigonzetti is a passionate, flamboyant choreographer, and Les Grands is clearly born to dance his work,” writes a Dance International Magazine reporter. “The Four Seasons is preternaturally angular and airy, a balletic-based study of dancers as creatures with [recorded] music by the Venetian-born Antonio Vivaldi,” observes a Boston Globe reviewer. “Cantata is earthy and human, utilizing a hearty, sweaty, barefoot modern-dance vocabulary with live accompaniment by Gruppo Musicale Assurd, an all-female quartet who perform contemporary compositions and traditional music of southern Italy.”
