Alfredo Rodríguez Trio

7:30 pm Thursday, September 24, 2015

Cuban-born pianist Alfredo Rodríguez, educated in the classical conservatories of Havana, is influenced as much by Johann Sebastian Bach and Igor Stravinsky as he is by Thelonious Monk, Art Tatum, and Keith Jarrett. Producer Quincy Jones, who first heard Rodríguez perform at the 2006 Montreux Jazz Festival, has mentored the pianist, who moved to the United States in 2009, on his career path. On The Invasion Parade, the follow-up to his debut album Sounds of Space, Rodríguez delves into his memories of the people and the culture he left in Cuba. The track “Guantanamera” garnered Rodríguez, who fronts a trio in his Penn State premiere, a 2015 Grammy nomination for best instrumental arrangement. Joining Rodríguez in concert are drummer Henry Cole and bassist Peter Slavov.
